Ann M. Lewis has been Chief Executive Officer of CareSouth Carolina, Inc. since 1980.

Ms. Lewis has more than 40 years’ experience as the Chief Executive Officer at CareSouth Carolina, having been with the organization since 1980.. She currently is actively involved in the Northeastern Rural Health Network (NRHN) and faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Office Practice Summit and actively involved in the National Association of Community Health Centers.

Although CareSouth Carolina is currently considered a “large” community health center serving over 38,000 patients in ten rural communities of South Carolina and staffing over 550 employees, the organization first began in 1980 with only four staff and one location. Ann has shepherded that growth over the past three decades addressing the needs of the uninsured and minorities of the region experiencing some of the worse health care outcomes in the nation.

Over the years, Ann has been recognized as a national health care leader with appearances on the CBS Evening News special program, the Best of Us, hosted by Dan Rather, in addition to NPR, ABC Today and Time magazine. In South Carolina, Ann has founded and/or led many state safety net organizations including the South Carolina Rural Health Association, South Carolina Primary Health Care Association, and the Northeast Rural Health Network. As a national champion of improvement, Ann has co-chaired the HRSA Collaborative on Redesigning the Office Practice (ReDeFin), co-chaired the Institute of Healthcare Improvement’s 17th Annual Forum on Quality Improvement. She has served as core faculty to the IHI and Indian Health System Innovations in Planned Care (IPC) collaborative.

Currently, Ann is serving on the IHI/Common Wealth Fund/Duke Margolis Center for Health Policy Accountable Care Roundtable and the IHI/Common Wealth Fund Innovation Task Force – two progressive initiatives seeking US health care solutions from worldwide innovations.
